My name is Mr. Knox. I lived in 1968, East Memphis, Tennessee. In 1968, East Memphis was a wonderful place to live. There was less crime and people were easier to trust. The one downside was the segregation. On a normal day, I would go to work in the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division. The great thing about work in the 1960's was the lack of stress from work itself and also traffic. Memphis was just a small town then. I was at work when I heard about Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. That night was very scary. I stayed at work throughout the entire night because they had installed a curfew for people to get home. Everybody was talking about the killing and throughout the night, you could hear gunfire from people trying to protect themselves. Before he was assassinated, I just thought that he was trying to get all the black people to rebel or something. After, my attitude didn't change except for that I felt sorry for his family. After King's assassination, many people's attitudes and lifestyles changed. They finally integrated schools, but racial tensions started getting much worse and they never got better.
