Mrs. Judy was 26 years old the day of the Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination. She lived in Memphis, Tennessee. She was married to Mr. Rick, and had two little boys. She said the 1960's for her were scary in sad besides her loving family. There was a lot of racial tension in Memphis. She was struggling to make a living.
In 1968, Judy was out of school and college. She was an average stay at home mother, taking care of her two little boys. Her family, though struggling with money, was a very close and loving family. They went to church almost every time they could. It is very different from today because now she is retired with her children grown, giving her and her husband time to travel and be very laid back and relaxed.
The day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Judy was at home cleaning around the house, when the news came on the only TV in the house, which only had about 15 channels. She was very shocked and scared. It took several days for things to calm down. Media was everywhere trying to figure out the real story, which there were many different stories.
Judy didn't really know about Martin Luther King Jr. Before his assassination, except for that he was a man with a heart for what he thought was right, and a heart for his people. She didn't really have an opinion for him. She felt bad for Martin Luther King Jr. and his family and friends.
People's eyes were more open to African Americans and their problems. Their Salaries were greatly increased and their living standards were better. Judy said it took a little while for things to get normal. It was awkward how things changed so fast.
Media was everywhere the day of the assassination. The media definitely made Memphis, Tennessee look bad. Everybody thought Memphis, Tennessee was a city with only bad people.
