Vonica Y by Anthony Y., Harding Academy

In this paragraph I am going to be talking about the meta-narrative of Martin Luther King's death. In this project I interviewed my mother Voncia Y. who was the age of 8 when the killing of Martin Luther King took place. My mom stayed on 1125 Vollintine street in North Memphis. It was very clean in Memphis, not a lot of crime was made during the 1960's era. It was carnival parade always going on, in Downtown Memphis. The excitement was centered around Elvis Presley who was a famous American singer, who lived in Memphis, Tennessee. The thing that stood out to my mother around the 1960's the most, was that Halloween was like a holiday. It was like a holiday because you could go through the neighborhoods and no one would bother you. Also when you would go trick or treating no one would try to put needles or drugs in your candy like they do now. My moms life around the 1960's was happy, easy living, lots of Fourth of July parades, lots of family cook outs and summer was three months long. In the winter my mom would walk to school in at least four inches of snow at a distance of at least three miles. Now a days if there is drops of snow schools close down. The life is different today because now everybody has a car but back then there weren't a lot of cars driven because most people didn't have the money. Also on days it would snow the air would be so clean, your parents would go outside and make snow cones out of the snow that had fallen. As you know now you can't do that because there is so much pollution in the air from cars and planes. The thing that my mom remembers the most about Martin Luther King's death was that there were lots of riots, strict curfew saying you had to be in house at six o'clock also people getting attacked by dogs. It was so bad to the point that my moms school had to close up on Fridays. During the death of Martin Luther King there were lots of mad people which led to lots of shooting and killing. When the death of Martin Luther King happened my mom was at home and was very shocked. The people around my mom were also in disarray and nobody could believe it. As night came people started to become violent by shooting and burning down things. As the days passed after Martin Luther King's assassination lots of riots became to take place throughout the city, and as a whole the city was out of control. Before Martin Luther King's death my mom thought of him as a man who was trying to get a lot of positive things accomplished for the black race that included freedom. After Martin Luther King's death my mom saw Martin Luther King as a man who tried to make the division between white and black stop and also a better life for black people. In my moms opinion the life of people was changed because it steered the black race on for the accomplishment of freedom. The peoples attitudes were changed because it made the black people angrier and more eager not to accept no for an answer.
