I was about 30 years of age in 1968. I lived on a Naval base because I was married to a military man and while I was living on the naval base I also was a housewife and raised two daughters. Memphis was a quiet town back then. What I remember about that time is President Kennedy was killed in 1963, Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968, and Robert Kennedy was killed in 1968. Memphis was bad, but not as bad as it is now. I think Memphis has gotten worse over the years. I worked on the naval base for about a year a quit to become a housewife to raise my two daughters. Life was quiet because I lived on the base. I remember about the day when King was assassinated was it was a sad day and there was a really bad snow storm that came unexpectedly. We started watching more tv to see what was happening. I felt bad and sad because I was taught to never worship anybody but God. I think Martin Luther King was a smart man and I appreciate him not being violent at this time. I was in my kitchen when I heard the news and I was surprised and shocked when I heard the news. I think people were shocked and there was little rioting around Memphis and the country, but the rioting was very conservative not like it is now. After Martin Luther King was shot I went to bed and I was wondering who did this and why they would do such a thing. I was at home because we were living on the base. The city was chaotic and people were very confused on what was going on. I thought King was a Christian, but also thought he was a human and felt that he was a good organizer. I thought people may have changed and you people have forgotten what the fight was all about. Life changed a little bit because the blacks and whites became closer and worked together. I think some people changed. I think some peoples attitudes changed, but also some people will never change their attitudes.
