Dannie H. by Alicia G., Overton High School

In 1968 Dr. Dannie D. H. was 29 years of age. He lived on 2007 Larry Dr. He remembers curfews where he couldn't buy any beer, and timers were very hard. The things that stood out most to him about living in Memphis were that there was strength in the Black community that came from being Black and proud. A typical day for Mr. H. was delivering packages in the 38111 and 38117 areas in east Memphis. He also had to tend to his family as he was preparing for his last child to be born. It was different from today because there was much more respect for authority and in today's time there isn't. The day Dr. Martin Luther King got assassinated he remembered that there was a lot of crime and disappointment. The thing that was different from normal was the riots. Mr. H. said that on that day he felt disappointed and filled with misery. When the assassination happened Mr. H. was on a package car in East Memphis off of Quince Road. People around him that day were filled with rage. Things throughout that night had gotten rough and more crime seemed to take place than ever before. After King was shot it was hectic and people poured into the streets with rage. That night, he was still delivering packages but in a different area. The city still had not calmed down. Mr. H. thought of Dr. King as a good man, and that he wanted peace for everyone throughout the nation. After his death Mr. H. still thought that Dr. King was a good man. He still had much respect for him. Life did change after Dr. King's death, drastically. Many people did act differently and some didn't. People were still getting treated cruelly. The last thing he wanted to add was that there were fire trucks running throughout that night. Also dogs barking and police sirens going off. This night changed everybody's life.
