It was early on a Thursday when I woke up to go to work at "Quick-Stop" the local grocery store in South Memphis. The city was a little different today because Dr. Martin Luther King was here today. This was a huge deal to have such a great leader and reformer in my city working for the betterment of people's lives here in Memphis. Once I got off work about 4:00 p.m I went over my girlfriend's house to relax over there. At about 6:00 we received news that Dr. King was shot at the Lorraine Motel. I went into total shock, my girlfriend and her parents were crying. I hurried over to my mom's house to check on her and she was sitting on the couch crying, it was all so surreal that he had been shot, we could not believe it. By this time Dr. King was pronounced dead and I felt as if a piece of my heart was just killed. Before King died he was a great leader and someone I looked upon with great respect, but when he died his life took on a whole new meaning. He became a soul who came and affected the lives of millions of people and would continue to change people. After his death African American people came together and fought for equality just as he did. His death changed the attitude of many people, leading to marches here in Memphis and eventually leading to equality and less segregation.
