I interviewed Clint W. for my MLK protect. In 1968 he was 11 years old. During this time he lived on Crafton street in Memphis with his mom and dad and five other brothers. He said that the house he lived in where WWII houses and they had asbestos siding and it was lower class living. Him and his five brothers all slept in the same room. Clint went to Kings berry elementary school which him and his brothers all walked to everyday. The typical day he said consisted of going to school, hanging with his friends and playing baseball. Before he went to kindergarden he said he worked for his uncle who taught him to read and write. When MLK was shot he remembers that him and his friends where out playing baseball and all the parents came out at once to get all the kids. He remembers thinking that it was a bomb because back then that had bomb drills at school on a regular basis because of the atomic bomb. Once inside he said that his father put up mattress in front of all the windows and doors except the front door which his father sat at the door with a gun looking out. They were also forbidden to go outside by his parents. He said that Henry Lobe was the mayor at the time and on TV he said that "Memphis will not tolerate civil unrest." He said there was rioting and people where throwing gasoline bombs. The mayor Henry Lobe stopped rioting by ordering police to take out the dogs and the firefighters to use fire hydrants to control crowds. The night of the shooting he said that he was at his house with all his family. He said after kings death peoples attitudes became negative. People that weren't racist before his death became racist and people that were already racist became even more racist. One last thing that he talked about was there was one black family one the street and he and the neighbors would play with their kids. After Kings death Clint's dad helped them move out of town because they were scared. Overall he said it was a very bad time and that he loved being able to remember the time by being interviewed.
