Gloria M. is an African-American woman who lived during MLK's assassination. She was 23 during the assassination of King. She lived in the Douglass community in Memphis, Tennessee. She lived in a poor community with a large family. She lived with 7 siblings and her mom and dad. Her community was fun although, there was segregation because the whole community was poor. In 1968, she was newly graduate nurse. She worked at John Gaston Hospital enjoying the single life. She lived with her parents and worked from 3-11. She shopped downtown on her days off from work because back then the malls were downtown. Now, she relaxes and spends much time at church. The day Martin Luther King was assassinated, she was on her way to Mason temple to hear him speak. She was in the car when she heard he had been shot. She kept going to Mason Temple once she arrived what she saw was horrible. She was people shooting, throwing rocks, and shouting. There was a lot of chaotic behavior. There were many police in pursuit for the safety of Memphis. She ,herself, was angry and upset. She cried about the situation. People were setting fires and rioting everywhere. King was an awesome God-sent individual. She respected and supported him in the Civil Rights Movement. After the assassination, she began to be more involved in Civil Rights Movement. She encouraged the younger. The problem was the awareness of segregation. She wishes that Congress especially Liberal Republicans would have tried harder to equalize the rights. She lived in a very radical time. Now, things are more divided than ever. President Obama is doing a great job to try and fix these problems.
