Mrs. Collier, by Kimari, Harding Academy

On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. My aunt Mrs. Collier was 13 years old. She remembers the day as it were yesterday. It was a normal day in Marvell, Arkansas. She was sitting on the couch watching one of her favorite television shows. All of a sudden breaking news and she wonders why, for she had just seen the evening news. She knew something was odd.

It wasn't long after and then came the announcement, "Martin Luther King Jr. has been assassinated". The United States was in a uproar. People were angry and crying. There were fires as a result of arsonists. She remembers being scared and shocked. Memphis has always been a place her family had always wished to come. They knew they were going to come to Memphis. She was worried about life in Memphis. After all Memphis wasn't far from Marvell, AR.
There had been many threats and even attempts to kill Reverend Martin Luther King. Never in her wildest dreams did she think anyone would kill him. My Aunt said, "They had killed other black civil rights activists and I don't know why I didn't think it would happen to Dr. King."

His assassination hit her hard. As a African American , she looked up to him. She felt like they had killed her dreamer.
