Jo Ann C. by DJ I., Cordova Middle

The person I'm interviewing is my grandmother, Jo Ann C. She is 60 years old. My grandmother was 13 years old in the 8th grade (Ironic right?) during the time of Martin Luther King Jr's assignation. She lived on Gather Parkway around the time of King's assignation. My grandmother stated "Before the time Martin Luther King Jr. arrived in Memphis to march, she barely knew anything about him. The day before he got killed, when I got out of school, they released me out of school early because of the important march. When I got out of school, I was looking or my sister Debrorah (my aunt) and by brother Jess (my uncle). My friend Jo Ann (ironic) and I looked for her without knowing we were actually marching. Before long, tear gas was thrown and a frenzy was caused. Me and Jo Ann ran and ran after my father. We lost track, so we kept running and eventually found my great aunt's house. My father came over there and picked me up and said that my mother was wondering where I was.
Eventually, he took me home. We didn't have school the next day for a reason I don't remember. It was on the news that Martin Luther King Jr. got killed and all the riots started. People were raiding stores and throwing Molotov cocktails into buildings. Everyone had curfews at 7:00 PM, some snuck out and raided the abandoned stores. A couple of my brothers friends has to say over my house because of the curfew. I was sad and scared because of all the things going on. It didn't really affect us directly, besides the emotions running around. Because of my age, I didn't understand the significance of Martin Luther King Jr. In my opinion, it has made a very big difference in current times. When we little during that time, we mad to ride on the back of the bus. We had outdated books, different school , and even different seats in restaurants. We also had our own water fountains for "colored people". As you can see my grandmother has lived through segregation and now everything is all better. This concludes my interview of my grandmother about her past.
