There once was a young woman on April 4, 1968 terrified and saddened. Her name was Mrs. Gilliam, she was 21 years old and already had her first child. She lived in a busy, thriving, multi-cultural community and city of North Little Rock, Arkansas. People were friendly in this town, she was a stay at home mom, and with a lot of family near by. She lived with her son and husband. Her everyday life consisted of: getting up early in the morning and getting her husband off to work, fix meals, run errands, and take care of her son. Even though being a stay at home mom was a very busy and hard job her family still found to time to get out at night with friends and family. The Gilliam family also got up and went to church on Sundays, which is what many families did. This especially happened in the city of Memphis, Tennessee which in her perspective was a very cultural, religious city, with a lot of history and music, and of course Elvis Presely. It's all different today. Mrs. Gilliam is my Nana along with 4 other grand kids. She gets to enjoy us but not have to take care of us like she did her other 2 children. Her husband is retired and that allows them to do more stuff and have a lot of free time. But there's one day when she, along with millions will never forget. That was the day of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. She remembers seeing it with her son on a black and white TV and was terrified for the reason for someone having so much hatred for someone to kill them. When she was younger she went to Little Rock Central High school in Arkansas. This school was just in the beginning stages of becoming integrated. They would have the national guard escorting black kids to areas because of the threat of whites. It was the first integrated High school in the southern region. But things had changed enough that on that day even some whites didn't want him to be killed even though they didn't like black people. When that night came to North Little Rock the city was very calm and nothing was different other than families watching the news about the murder and some still couldn't even believe it. She always thought his principles were right and she stood for them. But she had heard from articles that he wasn't very faithful and nice to his wife which made her dislike him as a man. However King did sacrifice his life for a cause that he wanted and longed for. This started to take effect after his death and this cause was the integration of all races. After his death whites began advocating rights for blacks and most of the white's culture changed because of it. This event in history made Lynette make it a priority to teach and raise up a son that did not care about the color of someone's skin but instead there heart. Martin Luther King Jr. was a good man which caused a good and new perspective of life to come from his death and his messages.
